CARBON MONOXIDE

The Silent Killer

Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a colourless, odourless, tasteless gas, produced when fuel burns. Fuels include natural gas, wood, petrol, coal, or kerosene. Breathing in Carbon Monoxide fumes prevents the body from using oxygen correctly, and can cause serious illness. Left untreated, Carbon Monoxide poisoning can be life-threatening.

The most common cause of Carbon Monoxide poisoning is faulty or poorly-maintained heating applicances.

If you or someone you know may have been exposed to Carbon Monoxide, or are experiencing symptoms, please remain calm but act quickly:

Turn off the CO source, only if you can do so quickly and safely without endangering yourself or others.
Leave the area immediately and get fresh air.
Contact an Ambulance immediately by calling 000.
If someone has stopped breathing, get the person to fresh air and start CPR immediately.

PREVENTION IS SIMPLE

Gas Safety Inspections

While Carbon Monoxide may be difficult to detect, Carbon Monoxide poisoning is easily preventable, by following these simple important steps.

Ensure all fuel-burning heating appliances and fireplaces are cleaned and serviced each year.
Only using fuel-burning heaters in well-ventilated areas, and never use portable heaters or lanterns while sleeping in enclosed areas.
Never use a gas stove or oven for heating a room.
Install battery backup Carbon Monoxide detectors in your home to warn you if CO levels begin to rise.
